Properly lay your sod. Prior to laying the sod, prepare your soil. Pull out any weeds and break up the soil. Compact the soil firmly but lightly, and make certain it is flat. The soil should be adequately moistened. Lay the sod in rows, and make sure the joints do not overlap. Pat down the sod and fill any gaps with soil. Your sod should be watered everyday for at least two weeks, then it will root itself and walk on it.

If your soil is highly alkaline, try mixing used coffee grounds into the soil. The coffee grounds provide a cheap way to re-supply needed acid to the dirt. Balanced soil will produce more flavorful, crisp vegetables and greens.

Your garden can really benefit from evergreens featuring berries. They will provide a splash of color in the drab and dreary winter months when a lot of other plants have lost their colors. Some examples of evergreens that produce berries and color in the wintertime are the American Holly, Cranberrybush, the Winterberry and the Common Snowberry.

When it comes to harvesting your vegetables, know when the optimal time is to do so. Different vegetables and fruits have their ideal seasons and months where they flourish, survive, and are harvested at the highest quality. For example, baby peas and zucchini taste best when they are picked young. However, tomatoes should be as ripe as they can be when pulled from the vine to ensure the best taste. Educate yourself about the best time to harvest your veggies.

Gardening is a very interesting and rewarding activity. Whether the garden is for fresh vegetables, or just for beauty of having flowers, the benefits are clear and never ending. Utilizing the suggestions in this article can increase the joy you find in gardening.
